San Diego Unified School District Vision Statement

All PK-12 students in the San Diego Unified School District are to receive comprehensive and equitable School Counseling services as a required part of the students' total educational program in order to prepare for successful grade level transitions with necessary character, college, and career readiness skills.

San Diego Unified School District Mission Statement
San Diego Unified School District's School Counselors are leaders and advocates in education by implementing essential programs, focusing on academic development, personal/social development, and career planning. School Counselors will establish and maintain partnerships with school and community organizations that promote student achievement.

Counseling Goals

  1. Encourage students in exploring career plans, including the education and training that a student would choose after school.
  2. Assist students in understanding their own behavior and the behavior of other people, including how to get along with other and how to be constructively assertive when students need to be.
  3. Assist students in learning the techniques of decision making and problem solving.
  4. Assist students in acquiring the skills necessary for academic success.
  5. Assist students in the development of moral values and in understanding the rights and responsibilities as a citizen.
  6. Assist students, parents, and teachers in working together.

In order to meet these goals, the counseling staff will:

  1. Meet with students to discuss any area of concern or to help students with any decisions they face.
  2. Meet with groups of students for student support purposes and to review information that is important to their future. Sometimes this will be in classrooms, and sometimes it will be in the counseling office. These meetings may include planning schedules, analyzing performance on tests, giving helpful information about high school courses, and college admission and/or career materials, or other concerns that students share with a group of students.
  3. Respond to requests for assistance from students, parents, and teachers.
  4. Provide information to students, parents, and teachers through the school’s website, announcements, and through individual contact with students.
